The Power of Gifts-in-Kind

By Heather Bartfai, Director of Alumni, Community & Donor Engagement

When we think of donations, cash is usually the first thing that comes to mind. But did you know there are other meaningful ways to support a cause you care about?

A gift-in-kind is a non-cash donation, something tangible and valuable that can directly benefit an organization. These donations can include items like property, equipment, school or office supplies, vehicles, musical instruments, art, jewelry, furniture, equestrian tack and even horses!

Over the years, QMS has been fortunate to receive a wide variety of thoughtful gifts from our generous community. These contributions have enriched our programs, enhanced our facilities, and supported our students in unique and lasting ways.

In addition to physical goods, publicly traded stocks and securities also fall under the category of gifts in kind and are gratefully accepted.

Why Give a Gift-in-Kind?
Gifts-in-Kind are a powerful way to make an impact without writing a cheque. Often, these items are already in your possession or part of your business inventory, making it an accessible and practical form of giving.

As a registered not-for-profit organization, QMS can issue a charitable tax receipt for qualifying gifts-in-kind. For items valued over $1,000, a professional appraisal is required before the donation can be accepted and receipted, in accordance with CRA regulations.

How to Donate
If you have an item or asset you believe could benefit QMS, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to me directly at hbartfai@qms.bc.ca or 250.746.4185 ext. 105 to discuss how your contribution can help us in growing change together.
