Stepping Back in Time

Our Grade 5 students explored the fascinating history of the Gold Rush through an engaging cross-curricular unit that connected language arts and social studies.

In language arts, students were transported to the 1860s by reading a novel about two teenagers traveling from Victoria to Barkerville in search of their missing father. At the same time, social studies lessons focused on how immigration and significant events such as the Gold Rush played a key role in shaping the growth of British Columbia.

To enrich their learning, students took on the roles of people from the Gold Rush era. They wrote and memorized monologues and presented them in character, using costumes and props to enhance their performances. This activity highlighted their creativity and communication skills while helping them build a deeper connection to the people and events of this important period in Canadian history.
