Huge results for QMS Robotics at the Port Alberni VEX Tournament on February 14!
In our very first year fielding a competitive Robotics team, we are thrilled to share that both QMS teams have officially qualified for the Island Championships, an incredible milestone for our program.
Team Strafe earned the Innovation Award for their creative and effective robot design, placed 5th in Skills, and finished the season ranked 7th overall.
The Skills Challenge is a solo, timed event where one robot competes on the official field setup, aiming to score as many points as possible. It demands strategic thinking, technical precision, and confident driving under pressure.
Team Clankers captured the prestigious Design Award, the highest non-driving honour in the tournament. This award recognizes excellence in engineering, programming, and the detailed documentation of the team’s design process.
Design Award winners automatically qualify for the Island Championships.
With only four teams per tournament advancing (Tournament Champion, Skills Champion, and Design Award winner), remaining Island spots were awarded based on overall Skills rankings across the season. Thanks to their strong performance, Team Strafe also secured their place at Islands.
Next up: Island Championships on February 28 at Brentwood College! From there, our QMS team is hoping to be one of four Vancouver Island teams who qualify to attend the VEX World Championships in St. Louis, MO this April.
For a first-year program, this achievement speaks volumes about the innovation, collaboration, resilience, and problem-solving our students have demonstrated all season long. We couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve built, and where they’re headed next. Good luck!
