At Queen Margaret’s School, learning extends beyond the classroom, and our ELD (English Language Development) students recently had the opportunity to engage in activities that combined language practice, reflection and hands-on experience.
The students participated in a garden taste test, sampling a variety of homegrown vegetables. This activity encouraged them to explore new English vocabulary, describe flavors, and express their personal impressions. By connecting language learning to real-world experiences, students were able to practice communication skills in a meaningful and engaging way.
In addition, students took time to reflect on those who have supported them since joining QMS. They wrote gratitude notes and crafted small bouquets as tokens of appreciation, extending their learning beyond language to the important social skills of empathy and recognition. Staff members were invited to participate as well, enhancing the sense of community and shared purpose.
These activities not only highlighted the bounty of Vancouver Island’s fresh produce but also reinforced important life skills: expressing oneself, showing gratitude, and fostering connections within a supportive community. Moments like these demonstrate how hands-on, reflective learning can cultivate both language development and social growth in meaningful, memorable ways.
