Senior School English Language Learning

EMBRACE English Language and Canadian Culture

At Queen Margaret’s School, we have created an English Language Learners program to meet the needs of a wide range of English language levels. Our ELL program is designed to increase students’ English language competencies and the language skills needed to successfully integrate into the regular academic program required for British Columbia high school graduation and entrance to North American universities and colleges. ELL classes at QMS provide instruction and practice in the English language, including grammar, vocabulary building, the mechanics of academic writing, and reading, balanced with listening and speaking skills.

Each student’s English level is assessed before being assigned to classes; ensuring placement is suitable for both language ability and age group. Our ELL teachers are qualified instructors with extensive experience teaching international students. While enrolled in the ELL program, students are exposed to and gain an understanding of Canadian culture and history and have opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of British Columbia through memorable tours to various locations around Vancouver Island.

In addition, faculty members from other academic departments give generously of their time to support ELL students in meeting their goals. Students in the ELL program regularly join their fellow QMS students in co-curricular and residence activities, providing numerous casual opportunities to practice English in real-life situations.

It's years later and QMS still feels very much like home. I was fortunate enough to make some incredible friends both with the students and faculty, and I still maintain many of them today.
