Leadership & Service

LEAD in Your Community

At Queen Margaret’s School, we have a long standing tradition of service to others and encourage students to demonstrate our school motto, "Serviter Fortiter” (Serve Ye Bravely).

As such, we recognize our obligation to affect positive change in our school, as well as local and global communities. All students in Grades 8-12 are required to complete 20 hours of community service each year. QMS students contribute time and skills to worthwhile programs including the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, the Cowichan Food Basket Society, Big Sister Program, World Vision Foster Child Program and Free the Children.

Closely tied to our commitment to our community is our Leadership Program. The basis of our program is are our signature courses of Leadership 9 and 10. These courses provide students with in-depth, meaningful inquiry about themselves, the foundation for authentic leadership. Students learn that they can be a leader, leading from anywhere they stand. In addition, students explore topics such as time-management, conflict resolution, goal setting, decision-making, mentors, organizational strategies, initiative, leadership styles and event planning.

With this framework of background knowledge and skills, and through the support of faculty, students are able to avail themselves of the many leadership opportunities within the school from Prefect Council, Student Council, and Captain positions.

QMS taught me to speak my mind no matter the consequences, I found this skill invaluable. QMS also taught me the importance of friendship and loyalty and these values still hold true for me today.
