Co-Ed Junior School Jr.K - Grade 7

Welcome to Queen Margaret's School. As the Deputy Head in charge of the Junior School, it is both my good fortune and honour to work with a dedicated and inspiring teaching staff that offers a host of exciting and sound learning opportunities to our elementary students. The School offers a program of enriched curricula with specialist teachers at all grade levels, extensive extra curricular opportunities, a character-building ethos of service, opportunities for self-discovery and expression in the Fine Arts, an equestrian centre ranked as the best in Canada, and a beautiful campus on 28 park-like acres. We are very proud of the variety and scope of the programs at Queen Margaret's School.

The Junior School enrolls around 150 Junior Kindergarten to Grade 7 boys and girls, while the Senior School enrolls another 150 girls. Through our programs and specialist teachers, we ensure that your child gets the attention and support required to become a capable, confident, self-motivated, and responsible citizen who has a lifelong joy of learning. Our clear expectations for behaviour in and out of the classroom have enabled us to create an environment where students learn and play in the security of knowing they are safe and respected as individuals.

QMS is much more than just an academic institution. Over our long history we have developed a well-rounded philosophy of education and built programs that develop the ‘whole child’. Life at QMS reflects the values and strives toward the goals inherent in the four pillars of Academics, Arts, Athletics and Service.

At QMS we bring the curriculum developed by the BC Ministry of Education alive in our classrooms, but we do not stop there. We provide more teaching hours than required by the Ministry, we begin our second language program five years earlier than the Ministry requires and we provide an exposure to Japanese as well as French.

In a time when the Fine Arts are being drastically reduced in many school programs, we are moving in the opposite direction; with choir classes starting in the Primary Grades and Band or instrumental music introduced in Grade 4. We have a Visual Arts specialist teacher who instructs our Grade 4-7 students in the specially equipped Art Studio.

We provide an extensive extra-curricular athletic program that is developmentally appropriate and develops individual skills while building a sense of team loyalty and a cooperative attitude. Our Outdoor Education program is another way we focus on building self-confidence and cooperative attitudes in an exciting setting. Many of our students extend their physical activities to include horse riding in our equestrian program.
To help develop the character of our students and start them on a path that will ensure they become engaged and contributing members of society, we expose them to many Community Service activities, from cleaning up beaches as part of a world-wide environmental effort, to visiting Senior citizens at a local care facility and helping them maintain their bird feeders. This is the attitude we model at QMS.

QMS is a community of learners, educators, caregivers, and friends. From its inception people have worked together to literally build this school and we continue to rely on everyone’s participation to reach our common goals. Change is inevitable, ongoing, and necessary in order to provide an education that is relevant to your children. When curriculum changes and new resources are needed, when buildings come and go, the uniform is being revised or playgrounds are built, we have relied upon the commitment of parents to continue to make QMS the best little school on Vancouver Island. As the Deputy Head in charge of the Junior School, I look forward to working alongside you and your child this coming year.

I hope you will find our website informative and expressive of the wonderful community of learning that has evolved here at Queen Margaret's School.

Sincerely,
